“The Screwtape Letters,” by C.S Lewis

London: Geoffrey Bles, March 1942, 1st Edition, 3rd Impression with original dust wrapper. 160 pages. 5×7.5x.5.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Wrapper Condition: Very Good. The original black boards and paper title label on the spine are clean and bright. The text block is clean. Tight spine and hinges. Free of foxing but some moderate tanning to the pages. Crisp corners and minor shelf wear. Pencil inscription to first free end paper.

Original third edition dust wrapper with black lettering and red border has unclipped price of 5s.net. Slightest loss to the head and tail of the wrapper’s spine. It has a two and a half inch tear on the outer seam of the wrapper as it folds to the inside front cover from edge wear. Light tanning to the spine of the wrapper, and a few minor spots. Some wear at the extremities and light marks else in beautiful shape. Early copies of this book with the dust wrapper are not easy to find because of the flimsy and brittle nature of the wrapper, printed during wartime restrictions on paper. In present condition, this 3rd Impression is scarce; now in protective sleeve.

The first printing of the first edition of this book was published in February 1942. This copy is the third printing of the first edition from March of the same year. Stated on the verso of the title page: Reprinted with some alterations by kind permission of “The Guardian.” An important and best-selling novel, dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien. Printed by Geoffrey Bles in London, March 1942.
