Beige cloth binding with blue, yellow and red Edwardian floral designs to front board. The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning, printed on laid-paper. The cloth has hand-age soiling; the spine is age-toned; Internally Very Good. Illustrated with 27 tissue-guarded sepia-gravures from life studies tipped-in from photographs by pictorialist photographer Adelaide Hanscom and Blanche Cumming. This first printing credited only to Adelaide Hanscom, later editions added Blanche Cumming. This edition is thought to be among the first American works to depict male nudity (by Hanscom); those these were toned down or removed by the time the 1914 edition was published. The Rubaiyat already a popular book from the late 19th century, was given a fashionable modern look for a new generation of readers in the early 20th-century by employing fine art photographs to illustrate this classic works of Persian love poetry. This edition of The Rubaiyat became a national sensation.
