“The False Hierarchy of Demons: Illustrated English Translation of Pseudomonarchia Daemonum” by Johann Weyer & Natalia Zasadzinska
2016 bound in faux leather with matching slipcase and satin ribbon marker
Pseudomonarchia Daemonum first appeared in 1577 as an appendix to Weyer’s “Praestigiis Daemonum (On the Illusions of Demons and on Spells and Poisons)” (1563) and is a classical catalogue of infernal spirits pre-dating known copies of the Lemegeton. Many consider the Keys of Solomon to be derived from Weyer’s work. It is also said to be an inspiration for Reginald Scot’s “Discoverie of Witchcraft.”
Johann Weyer (1515-1588) was a Dutch physician and a live-in student of the legendary Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa. Weyer was an advocate for those persecuted for witchcraft and was the first to use the term “mentally ill” or “melancholy” to describe people accused of practicing witchcraft.
