Limited First Edition—Scarce Second Issue, Revised at Hemingway’s Request

Ernest Hemingway – The Spanish Earth
Cleveland: The J.B. Savage Company, 1938.

First edition, second issue. One of 1,000 numbered copies, this being number 8.

This scarce second-issue copy of *The Spanish Earth* features Hemingway’s narration for the documentary film produced to raise funds for the Loyalist cause during the Spanish Civil War. Published while Hemingway was covering the war as a correspondent, this work reflects his deep involvement with the conflict—an experience that would later shape *For Whom the Bell Tolls*.

Bound in its original tan cloth, stamped in black and orange, this edition includes illustrations by Frederick K. Russell. The second issue is distinguished by its plain endpapers and the publisher’s disclaimer printed on the rear pastedown—changes made at Hemingway’s request after he objected to the presence of the Federación Anarquista Ibérica (FAI) banner in the first issue. As noted by Grissom, Hemingway was concerned about the risks of being associated with the anarchist group while continuing his work in Spain.

This copy is in fine condition, with no markings, making it an exceptional and well-preserved example of this significant work tied to Hemingway’s wartime experiences.
