Caussin, R.P. Nicolas. La Cour Sainte. Tome Second. Le Prelat. Le Cavalier. L’Homme D’Estat. La Dame. 1630. Publisher: Chez Sebastian Chappelet, Rue Saint Jacques, ua Chapelet. Paris. Written in French.
A treatise on the sanctity of the courts evoking the obligations of the nobility, and providing an overview presenting the monarchs, prices, and personalities, both ecclesiastical and civil. Tome II is in 4 parts. The Prelate (Saint Ambrosii), the Cavalier (Constantine), the Statesman (Boethius), and the Lady (Clotilde). Each part has a full-page woodcut of the figure that is being written about. There are no copies listed on Worldcat, and I cannot find a precise answer to how many tomes this was originally paired with. Some say four, while others say six. I can say that there are not any of this edition listed complete in either institutions, or online listings. I did not even find auction records of a complete set from this year.
Bound in full calf, with five raised bands, gilt borders to the boards, gilt titles and fleuron’s to the spine compartments. A woodcut title page, and 4 full page woodcut illustrations to each of the 4 parts. There are ornate head pieces, and drop caps throughout.
It is in Very Good condition with rubbing to the corners, the tail-cap is missing a small piece, the spine is fading with light cracks, and the boards have worming to the surface. Inside there is a small repair to the right margin of the title-page, heavy toning to some of the pages, with the rest having medium toning throughout. There are occasional burn marks, and worming from p. 433 till the end of the book. The worming is the worst in the last few pages- into the first pages of the index.
