A Very Rare and Early French Work on Palmistry, Astrology, and Physiognomy. 1571. Chiromance & Physionomie Par le Regard des Membres de L’Homme.
This 1571 edition was the second French edition, with the first French being printed in 1549. There was a Latin edition that came first in 1531. Thus making this the third edition, and second French edition.
The full title translates to– “Palmistry & Physignomy through the look of the human limbs, made by Jean de Indagine. More said, the definition of the faces of signs. Reigles astronom. of the judgement of illnesses. Natural astrology. Knowledge of the complexion of men according to the domination of the planets”.
Indagine was a German priest who became one of the leading figures of his time in chiromancy and physiognomy. The book breaks down these different arts, and is paired with many in-text illustrations of Palms, faces, charts, and images of astrological figures. It is a scarcely seen early edition of this work!
Bound in red paper boards with a green leather spine, gilt titles to the spine with 7 compartments with gilt designs. Inside it is filled with illustrations.
It is in Very Good condition with shelf wear and fading to the boards, and bumped corners. Inside there is trimming to the top margins, with minor affect to text on p.3. There are annotations to the first two pages, and the last page (full-page and undeciphered), and more on p. 91. There are also some heavy ink stains on 176-177.
Overall a clean copy.
