A classic 19th century African exploration. A detailed account of Stanley’s Emin Pasha relief expedition from 1887 – 1889 which initially drew considerable acclaim from the English and American public but was later subject to severe criticism for its cost and the conduct of many members of the expedition.  ‘A bit of trivia: Stanley began his account of the rescue at the Hotel Victoria, Cairo, on 25 January 1890, demonstrating a feverish capacity for rapid reporting, Stanley wrote continuously for fifty days at the rate of 20 printed pages per day.
