Deep red cloth covered boards with bright gilt titles stamped to spines. Red dyed top edges; fore edge of text blocks with some minor spotting. Each volume sits neat and square with no lean. Minor bumping to corners. Minor rolling to fabric at head and tail of spine.
Minor shelf wear. Internally clean and unmarked. Original fold out maps still attached prior to last free end paper in each volume. All three volumes wrapped in their correct impression original cream colored dust wrappers with red and black lettering. Wrappers show slight edge-wear with minor chipping and loss along edges. Slight spotting, tanning, and toning to spines of all three wrappers. All three wrappers are complete, undamaged, and show unclipped price of 21s net; now in protective sleeves.
This set is now housed in a beautiful, custom made, one of a kind, deep maroon slipcase with embossed J.R.R. Tolkien logo to both sides, internally adorned with black, white, and red map. Near fine condition. Published by Allen and Unwin, England, 1962.
