So what's the difference between a $500 first edition and a $5000 first edition?

Here's a great summary:

Investing in rare first-edition books hinges on rarity, author reputation, condition, and historical significance. First editions by notable authors or those with limited prints often carry higher values. Condition is crucial—well-preserved copies are more sought after. For collecting, consider specialized booksellers like Ageless Literature. Proper storage away from light and moisture is essential to maintain their condition. Overall, knowledge of the market and careful selection are key to making profitable investments in rare books.

Why collect antiquarian books anyway?   Phil Pirages seems to pin it pretty well.

To preserve rare books, ensure proper storage by placing books upright with space between them, matching sizes to prevent indentations, and avoiding prolonged stacking. Protect them from light, especially UV rays, and maintain a stable environment with temperatures around 65-70°F and humidity at 30-50%. Use acid-free materials for storage, and regularly dust books with a soft brush. Handle them with clean, dry hands, preferably with gloves, and minimize opening angles to protect the spine.  Additionally you should:

  • Store books in a clean, smoke-free environment to prevent odors and staining.
  • Avoid using bookmarks made from metal or other damaging materials.
  • Repair damaged books with professional conservation services to ensure longevity.
  • Keep books away from radiators, vents, and other sources of direct heat.
  • Consider storing highly valuable or fragile books in custom-made archival boxes.
