Munich: Oskar Beck, 1922–1923.

Two octavo volumes of Oswald Spengler’s Der Untergang des Abendlandes (The Decline of the West), one of the most influential philosophical works of the 20th century. This limited edition of 150 numbered copies is signed by the author on the limitation page of Volume I, with this set being number 33.

The volumes are beautifully bound in gilt-ruled dark blue morocco with raised bands on the spine, red gilt-lettered morocco labels, hand-marbled endpapers, and gilt top edges. Volume I is an early printing, bound by Beck after acquiring the copyright from Braunmüller, the original publisher. Volume II is the true first edition.

The text is accompanied by a forward written by Spengler in 1922. This set comes with its original slipcase, expertly restored, and an elegant custom leather slipcase for collectors. A superb example of this iconic work in exceptional condition, with only minor archival repairs.
